Maritime Safety

Shipping is perhaps the most international of all the world's great industries - and one of the most dangerous. It has always been recognized that the best way of improving safety at sea is by developing international regulations that are followed by all shipping nations. IMO's first task when it came into being in 1959 was to adopt a new version of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the most important of all treaties dealing with maritime safety. IMO has also developed and adopted international collision regulations and global standards for seafarers, as well as international conventions and codes relating to search and rescue, the facilitation of international maritime traffic, load lines, the carriage of dangerous goods and tonnage measurement. The Maritime Safety Committee is IMO's senior technical body on safety-related matters. Future Fuels and Technologies Hub: Explore the latest on new marine fuels and innovation

Massive Explosion at Shahid Rejaee port

Following the explosion and fire incident at Shahid Rajee Port, which resulted in significant loss of life, damage to port infrastructure, destruction of a large volume of containerized cargo, severe financial losses to cargo owners and container owners or shipping line, the entire safety, operational, and security protocols of the port have been called into question.  Fires caused by the huge explosion in the commercial port of Bandar Abbas in Iran on the morning of April 26 were spreading three days later,The explosion affected offices belonging to the port, and its intensity was sufficient to cause tremors felt in nearby cities, according to domestic reports. The blast also shattered the glass of buildings several kilometres away from the site of the incident Casualties & Emergency Response    - The death toll has risen to 70, with 1,210 injured, including 138 seriously hurt.
